how many montessori schools in the us

The Missing Voice in the Education Reform Debate

Over a century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori discovered through scientific observations of children that they are not empty vessels to be filled -- they are intrinsically motivated doers. She saw that providing a hands-on learning environment that valued choice, concentration, collaboration, community, curiosity, and real-world application produced lifelong learners who viewed "work" as something interesting
and fulfilling instead of drudgery to be avoided. Now, research in psychology and neuroscience continually validates Dr. Montessori's conclusions about children and learning, and Montessori schools are flourishing -- not just preschools but, increasingly, elementary, middle and secondary schools. So as the education reform debate thunders on, with the many sides agreeing on little beyond the fact that our schools as they are currently designed are failing our children, I can't help but wonder: Where is the voice of the Montessori movement in the American school reform conversation?

Fayli Kurds Struggle in Iraq and Kurdistan

The Kurds refer us to the central government and the central government refers us to the Kurdistan Region, the Fayli Kurds say. The Fayli Kurds returned to their homes after 35 years of displacement only to find their houses occupied by strangers who refuse to leave.

BAGHDAD, — The Faylis of Iraq consider themselves Kurds. Their distinct Kurdish dialect differs from Sorani and Kirmanji the same way Iraqi colloquial Arabic changes from one province to another.

The Faylis suffered enormously at the hands of Iraq's former Baath regime. They were branded as Iranians by Baghdad and expelled en masse from the country in the 1970s; they weren't even allowed to sell their properties or take any belongings with them.

Now, many Faylis feel they are manipulated by Iraqi politicians trying to win over their vote. They don't have a political party to represent them and thus have a sense of injustice in the new Iraq.

what are the two main functions of the lymphatic system?

An Overview of the Design and Function of the Cat

The systems that make up the feline are all rather remarkable. The most important physical systems of the cat include: nervous, endocrine, respiratory, lymphatic, digestive, reproductive, urinary, circulatory, and musculoskeletal.

The nervous system is made up of the cerebrum, cerebellum, midbrain, spinal cord, twelve pair of cranial nerves, and paired sets of peripheral nerves that extend from the spinal cord to all parts of the body. There are many functions governed by the nervous system, including learning, reasoning, memory, and judgment. Involuntary action, which is controlled by the cerebrum, is also considered a part of the nervous system. Blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate are monitored by the midbrain and so also contained within the nervous system.

SparkLife » Annoying Corrections (That Are Not Correct)

Posted January 27, 2012

Sometimes people really do have good intentions when they correct you. "But those aren't honeybees, they're killer bees!" would be a helpful clarification for someone to make if you had just boasted that you can eat the most bees. Often, though, people just enjoy the opportunity to be snarky and pedantic. You ask someone if you can have a glass of water, and he's like "I don't know, can you?? Nyah hah ha!" This person is fully prepared to watch you die of thirst and shame if it never occurs to you to say "may I" instead.

All of these corrections are annoying, but to top it off, some of them are not even necessarily correct. Here are four such gripes.
