One year, while snooping through my mother's closet searching for hidden Hanukkah gifts, I came across a big, heavy rectangular box. Wrapped. Fortunately (for me) the wrapping was either thin or light-colored (both?) and if I stretched it and peered really closely, I could make out what was inside. I knelt on the floor next to my best friend and we squinted and pressed our fingers along the paper, reading the words underneath. "Right…Off…The…Top…Of…Your…Head! Right off the top of your head!" I was getting a new game, I declared triumphantly and for the rest of the month, whenever anyone asked me what I was getting for Hanukkah, I smugly replied that I was getting that new game called "Right Off the Top of Your Head."

Have you ever heard of that game? Yeah. Me neither.

Turns out I had been snooping at the *back* of the Scattergories box. Classy.

Well, it's been a trip, that's for sure. Losing my mom has been an exercise in rollercoaster riding. The ups & downs have been tremendous. Intellectually, I knew this. But until a person goes through it, sometimes the symptoms aren't clear until they pass.

My apologies, dear readers for not writing sooner. It's been an incredibly busy & deep time. What feels right to me is to be quiet, to listen to whatever voice rises from my core. Sometimes the voice is delicate and vulnerable, while other times it's like a lion's roar. Now, with a little time passed, it feels alright to write again…

Awkwardness

Apparently many hospice people agree that it's best to clear out the remaining clothing & other items of a deceased loved one as soon as possible after that person died. My sister-in-law cleared out my brother's belongings, with all of us helping, on the weekend after Mickey passed.

Similarly, the Friday after my mom passed, my brother & I went through her stuff. Then, this last week, it took me 5 days and 7 pickup truck loads of donation stuff to clear out my mom's storage locker. Even then, there was a trailer full of stuff my brother took back with him, and a small trailer's worth I took.

But, the awkward part was seeing my mother's belongings in the thrift stores, after the fact. A week or so after the first round of donations in Illinois, I had an interview at a recruitment agency. Since I had no work clothes with me, I went to the thrift store to buy an outfit. As I was walking around, I saw one of my mother's shirts hanging on the rack. That was hard.

It was a little better in Colorado, when I kept bringing load after load of donation goods to the thrift store in Conifer, and would see my mom's items laid out from the load before. Those ladies were fast! Unlike in Illinois, I befriended the main lady who was in charge of donation receiving. Her gratitude and bubbly personality made the entire situation easier. Within the first day, there were several large ticket items that sold. All the money would go to the local organization that helped families of out-of-work people get by in the expensive Denver Foothills area.

That first day, driving back from the storage locker to where I was staying, I couold feel my mom's presence in the pickup, thanking me for my efforts. While rolling along the hilly road, tears ran down my cheeks as I replied, You're welcome, Mom.

Stuff

My brother really inspired me to slash & burn. He was really good at detaching from our mother's stuff back in Illinois. He was great at just keeping things that were useful in the short term, or that had emotional or monetary value as a keepsake.

The European Union's Economic Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn on Monday called the Greek Parliament's approval of a further round of budget cuts a "crucial step forward," but Germany insisted it would still take some time before the second bailout is delivered.

Germany, which as Europe's biggest economy pays the largest part in bailout deals, said it wouldn't give its final approval for the new aid payments until early March — after it becomes clear how many banks and investment funds are willing to take losses on their Greek bonds and the parliament in Berlin votes on the new measures.

Pushing the new bailout back for several weeks underlines the amount of distrust that has built up against Greece over the past two years, when many promised cuts and reforms were passed in its Parliament but never actually implemented.

But it also means that Greece, its citizens, and the rest of the world economy won't know for several weeks whether the country can avoid a potentially disastrous default. A bankruptcy could force Greece out of Europe's euro currency union, drag down other troubled eurozone countries and further roil global markets.

I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I've gone down to an altar and "given my life to Jesus".

Growing up in an evangelical denomination, especially one with roots in the revival movement, a church service doesn't go by without an invitation to "come down and lay it all on the altar."

That's true for church camp too. You may spend the day playing ultimate frisbee, swimming in the pool, or finding your next significant other, but once service begins in the old outdoor tabernacle it's time to get down to business. It is time to make sure you have "a personal relationship with Jesus Christ."

I'm not sure that there is anything more intrinsically attached to evangelicalism than a "personal relationship with Jesus."  Today it seems so fundamental to the faith. In order to be a Christian you must have a personal relationship with Jesus. However, historically speaking that hasn't been the case, at least not in the way we speak of it today. In fact, it was American Evangelicalism that gave birth to the modern notion of a personal relationship with Jesus. The phrase itself is found nowhere in the Bible. Now, is the idea of humanity having a relationship with their Creator in the Bible? Abosolutely! It's written across every page and is the very reason for the Bible's existence.

However, I believe that the relationship between God and man, between us and Jesus, that we see described in the Bible is very different that what we in evangelicalism describe as a "personal relationship with Jesus."

Murals depicting the life story of a somewhat eccentric but immensely-adorable ascetic who lived in the Southern Song Dynasty now adorn the walls of the famed Lingyin Temple. Wu Yong reports.

Eighteen huge life-size murals depicting the life of the legendary monk Ji Gong (1130-1209) debuted at Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, in November.

Delicately painted on the walls of Ji Gong Hall in the temple, the 18-meter-high and 50-meter-long murals display 18 stories about Ji, a Robin Hood-like living Buddha, anecdotes about whom can be heard in every corner of the city.

Unlike the heavy paint and thick colors in Western frescoes, the Ji murals are more like a Chinese water-and-ink painting.

The murals are not painted directly on the wall, but on palettes that hang on them. The background features a yellow earth color and the drawings are mainly in black and white with some red shadows.

The quiet colors and the vague scent of mud, combining with mineral pigments, convey a sense of peace and tranquility.

After sailing in the Whitsundays, we had 4 days to get to Brisbane to meet Marc off the plane from the UK. Why is it every place that looks like it is only an hour's drive away as only an inch on the map is in actual fact at least 500 kilometres? Australia is so vast; there is a postcard they sell here that had a map of Australia with the whole of Europe inside it and so much spare space left that it could fit in again.

We usually used to drive in the morning, stop for lunch and then pull into our hostel for the night mid- afternoon. It was always better to drive in daylight judging by the amount of kangaroo bodies by the side of the road in the morning, they are attracted by the headlights and jump in front of the cars at night. As we were not in a large 4 wheel drive with bull bars, a large 'roo could have written the car off, let alone both feeling dreadful to kill such a lovely animal that we have spent so much time petting and feeding all through Oz

That's very funny! No, I'm very much enamored with every different period. It's so funny because people often say -- or people talk about period pieces -- and I never really faction different periods or divide them from one another. I just think that really everything is of a specific period whether it be 2016 or 1810. It was extraordinary, the architectural feats that some of the couture gowns entailed on W.E. entailed. You have no idea. It was extraordinary.

A wry smile passes across my face because it reminds me yet again of Ann. It wasn't one of our songs. She doesn't like most music from the 80s but those lyrics fit us. They remind me of the intensity and the warmth. It reminds me of the days when we would lie in be and listen to each other breathe and feel an indescribable calm. But that was then and this is now so I shrug and go back to my reading.

I am midway down the page when my reading is interrupted again by John Denver singing Perhaps Love.  I can't say that I was a big fan of his but Ann was and she is the reason this song exists in my library.  The opening catches my attention
